In their effort for continuous improvement, Extractora del Atlántico and Extractora La Francia trained their plant personnel on the proper use of fire extinguishers and set up fire brigades.

A total of 47 people were trained, who made part of two fire brigades, one for each palm oil mill. Taking advantage of the expiration date of the fire extinguishers, which must be emptied before being refilled, these trainings "are usually constant," says Pedro Cerrate, Agocaribe Certifications Manager, "to make sure that the cylinders are clean after practice."

“We begin with a theoretical framework. We try to make learning 20% theory and 80% practical." Hernandez further tells us that during the briefing employees are instructed on the different types of extinguishers there are, those with CO2 and AVC systems, the distance that the applications must be made and remind employees in what circumstances they should be used”.

Then practices and drills with water, fuel, applications at different distances, using the rolling unit with two people, how to use the gauge, are carried out and locating the expiration dates, etc.

“I recommend that-trainings- be done every time the extinguishers expire. To take advantage of their use, handling and to remind people that the extinguisher must be handed in 100% empty”.
